“Miasmal Rain and Wild Smoke” versus “Wind and Frost in Snowy Areas” :A Comparison of Ecological Metaphors between Su Shi’s Relegation Literature and Plateau Epic Suffering Narratives
【Abstract】 This paper takes ‘miasmal rain and smoke’ in Su Shi’s relegation literature and ‘wind and frost in snowy areas’ in Tibetan ‘King Gesar’ as core images, to compare the constructive logics of suffering narratives between the relegation culture in the central plains and the plateau epic tradition from the perspective of ecological metaphors. Through close reading and cross-cultural comparison, this paper focuses on two kinds of ecological metaphors in Su Shi’s relegation literature and Tibetan epics, and reveals how the two civilizations have changed the extreme natural environments into their cultural symbols. Su Shi has dispelled the threat of ‘malaria’ with the integration of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, and completed the spiritual salvation in the main adjustment of ‘peace of mind is home’; King Gesar has encoded the natural crisis as a warning of the imbalance of the cosmic order through the sacred narratives of ‘ snowstorm-heroic demon’, and relied on sacred interventions to restore the ecological ethics of the coexistence of man and god. Thus, it explores how Han-Tibetan culture uses extreme natural images to symbolize suffering and achieve spiritual redemption. Through close reading and comparative study of the texts, this paper reveals the cultural generation mechanism of ecological metaphors and its important inspirations to modern ecological criticism, and provides a new paradigm for cross-civilization suffering narrative comparisons. Although there are differences in the cognitive basis(empirical rationality vs. sacred thinking) and the path of salvation(spiritual transcendence vs. sacred order), both Su Shi ‘s relegation literature and plateau epic suffering narratives realize the meaning of suffering and gain the assignment of it through ecological metaphors. It thus provides the complementary wisdom of ‘adaptation’ and ‘awe’ for the construction of contemporary ecological ethics.
