An Exploration of Health-Preserving Exercises of Emei Traumatology School
【Abstract】 This paper systematically reviews the historical evolution and academic characteristics of the Emei Traumatology School’s health-preserving exercise system, recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Sichuan Province. Originating during the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty, the school integrated Buddhist-medical Daoyin( guided exercises) and martial arts essence through its ancestral Lei family. It evolved into a unique system blending Zen,martial arts, and medicine under the fifth-generation inheritor,Professor Luo Caigui. The exercise system comprises eight forms, including Xianfeng Hunyuan Zhuang( Immortal Peak Primordial Stance) and Yingzhua Juli( Eagle Claw Strength),emphasizing foundational stance training combined with dynamic exercises.Centered on spinal biomechanical regulation,it adheres to the principle of " three adjustments integration"( body, breath, and mind).Academic distinctions include: the Zen-medicine philosophy of holistic cultivation of form and spirit; a spine-centric approach to musculoskeletal system rehabilitation; therapeutic efficacy in Qi regulation and mental soothing for emotional disorders; and specialized enhancement of Tuina( Chinese therapeutic massage) skills. Through harmonized static-dynamic training, this system addresses clinicians’ needs for " bone alignment and tendon flexibility",while demonstrating dual clinical value in managing spinal-joint diseases and psychological conditions. It provides innovative resources for non-pharmacological therapies in traditional Chinese medicine( TCM) within the modern context of integrative medicine and physical rehabilitation.
