Casting Techniques of a Hu Vessel Excavated from Lisangudui Chu Tombs
【Abstract】 The piece-mold casting technique was a unique bronze casting technology in ancient China. By the late Warring States period, the technology of separate casting and decoration of bronze wares had reached a peak, yet the scientific analysis of artifacts from this period remains relatively limited. This paper focuses on a batch of bronzes unearthed from the Chu tombs discovered at Lisangudui, Anhui. By combining macroscopic observation, petrographic analysis, SEM-BSE, and SEM-EDX, this paper discusses the casting techniques of bronze vessels from the late Warring States period by craftsmen from the Chu state. This study reveals that, although no innovations were introduced to the separate casting techniques used for Chu bronzes, the correspondence between these techniques and specific vessel types is more diverse than previously understood. This phenomenon may be a result of artifacts being made by craftsmen from different regions. Consequently, it is discovered that the bronze production landscape of Chu was broader than previously known.
