The Problem of Asymmetry in Sound Studies from the Perspective of Actor-Network Theory
【Abstract】 This study addresses the “asymmetry” problem prevalent in current sound studies, where the concept of sound often entails a binary opposition between nature and socio-culture, and the analysis of sound technology reveals a schism between human/non-human and pre-modern/modern categories. Employing Actor-Network Theory(ANT) from a “non-modern” perspective, the research redefines sound as a singular event, emphasizes the dynamic role of sound technology as a mediator, and analyzes the collective connections within sound networks. The singularity of sound resolves the partiality inherent in both ontological and social constructivist approaches, revealing the dynamic interplay among sound sources, transmission media, and receivers. Sound technology, through its mediatory practices, weaves heterogeneous actor-networks. The collectivity of sound highlights the complex interconnections among technical objects, power deployments, and society. By integrating these three attributes, the study proposes a novel paradigm for “sound-technology-society” research.
