【Abstract】 Based on the formula “Great School = Great Principal + Great Management + Great Culture” and the approaches of forward-and-backward extension and dual-level argumentation, this paper discusses the essence of a great school from the aspects of foundational origins, manifestation characteristics, and formation processes. The paper follows a realist ontology and structuralist methodology, with the three dimensions mutually explaining and supporting each other. The paper explores both the static features and dynamic processes of a great school, emphasizing the interaction between people and culture within the school while considering the influence of broader social structural elements such as educational systems and mechanisms. The characteristics of a great school are being a benchmark institution, possessing organizational self-sustaining, and having excellent cultural genes. The characteristics of a great principal are being visionary, resourceful, and communicative. The characteristics of great management are clear and explicit frameworks, meticulous and aesthetically details, and excellent and rich textures.
