【Abstract】 The “Chongxi’s Increase in Tribute Payments” refers to an event during the reign of Emperor Xingzong of the Liao Dynasty in the Chongxi period, where he took advantage of the Northern Song Dynasty’s internal and external difficulties to force it into increasing its annual tribute payments.From the perspective of the internal political structure of the Liao Dynasty, Emperor Xingzong actively promoted marital alliances with the Song Dynasty during the negotiations, aiming to leverage external forces from the Song to break the monopoly of the selection of the empress by the imperial consort’s clan, thereby consolidating imperial authority and advancing his plan to pass the throne to his son.From the perspective of the differing conceptions of orthodoxy between the Liao and Song Dynasties, Emperor Xingzong’s initiatives, such as seeking marital alliances and referring to the annual tribute payments as“tributes”,reflected his strong aspiration for the status of “Chinese orthodoxy”,attempting to construct a universal order of“integration of the Hua(Chinese)and Yi(non-Chinese)peoples”.The Song Dynasty, adhering to a narrow concept of Hua-Yi differentiation, rejected the marital alliance and ultimately compromised by increasing its tribute payments, highlighting the significant differences in their “China” identity and conceptions of orthodoxy between the two dynasties.更多还原
