Exploration of Elemental Geochemistry and Paleoclimate of Linxi Formation in Jarud Banner,Inner Mongolia
【Abstract】 Abstrct: This study investigates the Taohaiyingzi section of the Late Permian Linxi Formation in the Zhalut area of Inner Mongolia through integrated stratigraphic structure and rock assemblage and comprehensive geochemical analyses of rock major elements, trace elements, and clay minerals, combined with key geochemical indices including Sr/Ba, V/(V+Ni), and Ni/Co ratios to systematically characterize the depositional environment and paleoclimatic conditions. In the Taohaiyingzi section, the Linxi Formation is mainly composed of fine sandstone and mudstone, showing the stratigraphic structural feature of coarsening upward followed by fining. The Sr/Ba values indicate a fresh water continental sedimentary environment, and the values of V/(V+Ni) and Ni/Co reflect the lacustrine facies conditions of weak oxidation-weak reduction. The major element ratios(MgO/CaO, Al2O3/MgO), trace element indices(Sr/Cu, Rb/Sr), and paleoclimatic index C collectively indicate a warm and humid climate, while the Chemical Index of Alteration(CIA) suggests moderate weathering intensity. The clay mineral assemblages dominated by chlorite and illite reveal a transient arid episode towards the terminal depositional phase. Our findings establish that the Late Permian Linxi Formation in the Zhalut region represents a deltaiclacustrine system that developed under predominantly warm and humid conditions with episodic dry-hot fluctuations.
