From the Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon to Classical Poetry: A Brief Exploration of the Cultural Significance of "Intestines"
【Abstract】 This study employs classical Chinese poetry as a textual lens to investigate the concept of "intestines" in the Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon. In Chinese medicine, the intestines serve not only as the receptacle and conduit for water and grains but also as the source of essence, qi, and fluid transformation. The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon categorizes intestines into large and small divisions, which synergistically perform digestion, absorption, and fluid distribution, thereby supplying the material substrate for vital activities. Their tortuous anatomical structure reflects both spatial efficiency and functional optimization for nutrient transformation, exemplifying the unity of structure and function. Moreover, the intestines are intimately linked to mental activities; impaired conduction can precipitate emotional disorders, a perspective that converges with the modern "brain-gut axis" theory. Intestinal patency not only sustains physiological equilibrium but also modulates spiritual regulation, reflecting the holistic Chinese medical perspective of body-spirit integration. By elucidating the application of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) in literature, the paper seeks to enhance contemporary TCM practitioners’ awareness of cultural heritage and encourage a return to the classics to explore the origins.
