论译经与中土作品语言的相互影响——以“长物”等词语为例
Mutual influences between Chinese Buddhist texts and non-Buddhist Chinese literature: A case study of zhangwu(长物)
【Abstract】 The term zhangwu(长物) is often believed to have first appeared in Shishuo xinyu(世说新语). But it had already appeared frequently in earlier Chinese Buddhist texts since the Wei dynasty. The word zhang(长) meaning “excessive, surplus” can be found in pre-Qin classics and became more frequently used in Chinese Buddhist texts. Many disyllabic words with zhang then emerged in coordinate structures such as yingzhang(盈/赢长, “abundant surplus”) and yuzhang(余长, “residual surplus”), or in modifier-head structure such as zhangyi(长衣, “excessive clothing”) and zhangcai(长财, “excessive wealth”). These words, in return, influenced later Chinese literature, giving rise to expressions such as the zhangwu(长 物, “excessive possessions”) in Shishuo xinyu and the zhangyu(长语, “excessive words”) in Shipin(诗品) .This is an example of contact-induced development of Chinese vocabulary, which implies the mutual influence between early Chinese Buddhist texts and later non-Buddhist Chinese literature.
