Musical Archaeological Experiments and In-depth Exploration of Tone Sequences and Scales of the Earliest Bone Flutes from Jiahu
【Abstract】 Among the bone flutes unearthed at the Jiahu site, two belong to the earliest period (Phase I,Stage 1):the five-hole bone flute M341:1 and the six-hole bone flute M341:2.Dating back approximately 9,000 years, they have been a major focus of academic research.Employing the musical experimental archaeology replication method, precise replicas of these two earliest bone flutes were crafted. The results show that by applying the oblique blowing technique to each end of the experimental replicas, different tone sequences and scale structures can be obtained.Specifically, the M341:1 flute exhibits a tetratonic sequence, while the M341:2 flute demonstrates a pentatonic scale capability. The tonal structures of these earliest experimental flutes reveal a certain genetic and isomorphic relationship with the tone sequences of the experimental replicas of the mid?period seven?hole flutes. It can thus be argued that the earliest five-and six-hole bone flutes from Jiahu laid the foundation for the refinement of tone sequences and scales in the mid-period seven-hole bone flutes that followed.
