Growing in the Crevices: Spatial Narrative in Zhang Chu’s Fiction
【Abstract】 In Zhang Chu’s writings, the static physical environment of country towns forms a tension with capital-driven alienated fields. Traditional ethics intertwine with modern consumption patterns, and oppressive spaces trigger characters’ impulses to escape. Those who leave their hometowns encounter class restructuring in cities, while returning migrants face emotional estrangement, and circular migrants fall into the paradox of mobility. The writer constructs breakthrough paths through cosmic imagination and strange tales, opening spiritual channels that transcend reality for those unable to escape. Women build emotional communities through mutual assistance, while men encounter ineffective patriarchy and emotional disability, with self-isolation and collective loneliness becoming representations of spatial suppression. Zhang Chu explores the possibility of redemption through spatial reconstruction, establishing a literary space with universal significance.
