【Abstract】 The headline “VO, V de shi shenme” is a special form of expression, which has properties of both metadiscourse and primary discourse. It expresses the exploration of essence(at discourse level), based on questioning speakers’ judgment of objective phenomena(at syntactic and semantic level). Speakers constructs a “phenomenon-essence” cognitive framework between the speaker and listener, by the means of viewpoint transfer and metalinguistic negation. This reflects people’s concern with psychological/emotional factors and exploration of the social and cultural significance hidden in the phenomenon. The construction applies to specific contexts.It plays a part in interpersonal interaction as news commentary headlines. One is to adjust the cognitive state of the listeners, the other is to create polyphony discourse space. Unlike the traditional Rhetorical Question which the main function is information filling, its essence is cognitive regulation construction.更多还原
