【Abstract】 Lyons tried to account for subjectivity and objectivity of modality from the perspective of Semantic Tripartition by Hare, but his account was challenged by Portner. To reply to this challenge, we need to reconsider how Semantic Tripartition may account for the semantics of modality. In order to make a better theoretical account for the semantics of modality, we dissect it as a three-dimensional structure, and associate the semantic orientation of modality with neustic, one of the semantic factors in Semantic Tripartition, and the other two semantic dimensions of modality semantics with tropic, another semantic factor in Hare’s theory, thereby systematically accounting for the inner structure of the semantics of modality. Consequently, we overcome logical inconsistency underlying Lyons’ s view and reply to Portner’s challenge.更多还原
