海外留学生群体如何影响中国国家形象?——基于大样本定量证据的探索
The Impact of Overseas Students on China’s Country Image:An Exploration Based on Large-Scale Quantitative Data
【摘要】 庞大的海外留学生群体如何影响中国的国家形象?本研究基于39个国家跨越15个年份的民意调查进行定量探索。结果显示,中国留学生在东道国人口中的占比与该国被访者对中国的整体评价显著正相关,说明海外留学生有助于提升中国的国家形象。通过与中国留学生直接或间接接触,东道国民众加深了对中国客观实力的认知并减轻了对中国的偏见,这是海外留学生发挥中国形象促进作用的重要途径。异质性分析表明,东道国与中国的各方面差异加大会抑制海外留学生对中国形象的积极作用。此外,在东道国的年轻人、社会经济地位较低群体以及宗教观念较弱人士中,海外留学生对中国形象的提升作用更加明显。本研究从生源国的角度验证了依靠留学生传播国家形象的可行性,并为中国的出国留学政策以及国家形象塑造提供了启示。
【Abstract】 How does the large population of overseas students impact China’s country image? This paper conducts a quantitative analysis based on public opinion surveys carried out over 15 years across 39 countries. The findings reveal a significant positive correlation between the proportion of Chinese students in the host country’s population and the overall evaluation of China by respondents in that country, indicating that overseas students play a role in enhancing China’s country image. Through direct or indirect contact with Chinese students, people in the host country develop a deeper understanding of China’s objective strengths and reduce their prejudices towards China, which serves as an important mechanism for overseas students to improve China’s image. Heterogeneity analysis shows that greater differences between the host country and China across various dimensions may limit the positive impact of overseas students on China’s image. Additionally, among younger people, those from lower socio-economic backgrounds, and those with weaker religious beliefs in the host country, the influence of overseas students on improving China’s image is more pronounced. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of leveraging international students to enhance a country’s image from the perspective of the country of origin, offering valuable insights for China’s study abroad policies and country image-building efforts.
