Cognitive Mechanisms Behind the Formation of the Sanxingdui “Prominent Eyes” Style Based on Cognitive Neuroscience
【Abstract】 The “prominent eyes” design of Sanxingdui bronze head sculptures is characterized by protruding eyeballs and upturned outer corners. This visual tension stimulates the brain’s facial recognition-sensitive neural regions, triggering emotional arousal and a cognitive experience of “awe”. Regarding the spiritual connotations of the “prominent eyes”, scholarly interpretations fall into three main dimensions: a representational system of the Shu king’s image, a visual code symbolizing divine power, and a cognitive schema for religious rituals. The construction of a cognitive pathway from visual perception to emotional resonance to sacred experience reveals the coupling of neuroaesthetic mechanisms and religious cognitive models in the supernatural visual expressions of ancient Shu civilization. Through an interdisciplinary analysis grounded in cognitive science and neuroaesthetics, this study establishes a mapping relationship between the formal features of bronze art and cognitive-psychological effects, provides a neurobiological basis for interpreting Sanxingdui’s visual symbols, and expands the cognitive science approach to the contemporary transformation of traditional culture.
