Progress in Research on High-Performance Chronic Wound Dressings
【Abstract】 Chronic wound healing is a complex and time-consuming process that is susceptible to attack by microorganisms such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Traditional dressings, such as cotton and gauze, have a poor barrier effect, resulting in wounds that are easily invaded by bacteria, and their fibers adhere to the nascent granulation tissue during the healing process, and frequent dressing changes can exacerbate the patient’s pain or even lead to secondary trauma, and do not significantly contribute to wound healing. In the past decade, research on new wound dressings has been emerging, and these dressings can interact with wounds, and smart dressings can also sense and respond to wound conditions or environmental changes through built-in sensors or smart materials(e.g., stimulus-responsive materials and self-repairing materials), which can give wound dressings the function of releasing drugs in response to the wounds, and thus effectively promote wound healing. Based on this, this paper reviews the research progress in the field of wound dressings, summarizes the relevant characterization methods, and briefly outlines the future research direction in this field.
