Common Language, Common Framework and the Development of Social Sciences
【Abstract】 The lack of communication among various disciplines, or the “Scientific Tower of Babel”, has hindered the knowledge accumulation of social sciences. Building up a common language is the basic approach to solve this dilemma, among which developing a common framework is one of the most fruitful explorations. The common framework can provide a unified analytical basis for the research of different disciplines and promote knowledge accumulation by strengthening interdisciplinary communication. This article systematically reviews theoretical explorations of common language construction in social sciences and examines the development process and practical effectiveness of common frameworks through a case study of the Bloomington School. As a typical example of common framework, the institutional analysis frameworks proposed by the Bloomington School has achieved remarkable achievements in promoting interdisciplinary dialogue and knowledge accumulation on institution and human behavior. Reviewing the progress and challenges in the development of institutional analysis frameworks in the past 40 years can provide important enlightenment and inspiration for the development of common framework and common language in social sciences. Chinese scholars should attach importance to the development and application of common framework and common language, which will facilitate the development of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics.
