【Abstract】 The Columbia Companion to Modern Chinese Literature, chief edited by Kirk A. Denton of The Ohio State University, brings together the latest overseas scholarship on modern Chinese literature. Compiled through collective collaboration, it adopts a structural design that combines overarching theoretical surveys with problem-oriented thematic discussions. By moving beyond the limitations of a single, centralized narrative, the volume foregrounds the tensions among multiple discourses in literary history, reveals the dialogue between literary studies and cultural studies, and highlights the pluralization and polyphonic character of literary-historical writing. The Companion constructs a field of literary history defined by dialogue and debate, expanding cross-boundary approaches to literature through processes of transformation and deconstruction. This constitutes the book’s distinctive contribution and serves as a microcosm of the research ecology of overseas scholarship in recent years.
