The Modernity Turn in the Issue of “Animals and Religion” within Folk Beliefs
【Abstract】 Animals have been deeply involved in human daily life from ancient times to the present. On one hand, religion and beliefs influence people’s attitudes and behaviors towards animals; on the other hand, animals, as important elements in religion and belief, shape public thinking and spiritual worlds. Based on the perspective of “animals and religion,” three more concrete and religious modernity shifts can be outlined in contemporary folk belief research: the “subjective shift” from deities to daily life; the “media shift” from rural fields to the digital world; and the “emotional shift” from fear and awe to companionship. In fact, people’s existence and experiences in daily life have always been the emotional dimension and theoretical fulcrum of religious studies.
