【Abstract】 This lecture discussed the artistic and ‘phenomenological’ significance of sculpture as a key medium of remembrance through the lens of a famous painting: Rembrandt’s Aristotle with the Bust of Homer. In a detailed analysis, the Professor Jeanette Kohl showed how Rembrandt transforms both conventions of competition(between the art forms, among artists, and with antiquity) and traditional arttheoretical dichotomies(touch vs. sight, materiality vs. intellectuality, presence vs. remembrance) into a remarkably complex painted philosophy of touch. The lecture is based on the final chapter of the professor’s new book: The Life of Busts, summing up some of its ideas on the paramount role of bust portraits for the self-fashioning of Renaissance sitters.更多还原
