Advances in mechanism of erythropoietin in improving secondary neural damage after traumatic brain injury
【Abstract】 Traumatic brain injury(TBI) is one of the significant causes of mortality and disability worldwide. It is characterized by mechanical damage to the brain caused by external impact, which may result in irreversible harm to functional neurons. The cascade of reactions initiated by secondary injury is one of the primary factors leading to neural functional impairment and the elevation of oxidative stress and inflammatory levels. Erythropoietin(EPO), as a type I cytokine, mitigates secondary neuronal injury through multi-target neuroprotective mechanisms, representing a highly promising therapeutic strategy for TBI. However, its clinical translation still needs to address hematopoietic side effects and delivery efficiency bottlenecks. This review summarizes the research progress on exogenous EPO administration in TBI treatment.
