【Abstract】 Scientific research is no longer a peripheral supplement to architectural practice. It is rapidly becoming the discipline’s second major paradigm, on par with design and construction. In China, as around the world, this rise of research culture is fundamentally reshaping how architects perceive and analyse the built environment. The traditional experience-based model is giving way to evidence-driven, reproducible, and data-intensive inquiry. This shift is expanding architecture’s intellectual scope, allowing new "sciences" to be theorized and innovative "technologies" to be tested in practice. These changes set the stage for future innovation, offering two major opportunities: broadening the definition of architectural research and imagining new ways to apply it.Amid this transformation, China’s architectural research community faces two interconnected imperatives. First, it must reinforce its foundation by staying rooted in China’s unique cultural, climatic, and technological contexts. Only by preserving this foundation can Chinese architectural theory maintain its integrity and produce ideas that genuinely reflect its built environment. Second, researchers must break disciplinary boundaries and work with adjacent fields. Today’s most pressing design challenges, such as climate adaptation, demographic shifts, artificial intelligence, and even space habitation, emerge at the intersection of disciplines. The future of Chinese architectural science depends on balancing these dual tasks. Focusing solely on consolidation risks insularity, while unchecked exploration risks superficiality. By combining both, the field can contribute original insights to global discourse, rather than simply importing foreign paradigms. This paper therefore outlines key strategies: strengthen the foundation to uphold fundamental principles while crossing disciplinary to break new ground.Space architecture exemplifies the possibilities of such interdisciplinary work. Situated at the crossroads of aerospace engineering and architectural design, it integrates the functional demands of astronautics, such as mass optimisation, redundancy, reliable life-support, with architecture’s human-centred goals: creating environments that are habitable, psychologically supportive, and culturally meaningful. Its scope extends from reusing orbital modules to building permanent bases on the Moon and Mars, all in conditions of extreme resource scarcity and isolation. Success in this field depends on developing new theories, methods, and technologies that may challenge longstanding approaches in aerospace engineering. For example, architecture’s focus on spatial experience questions the purely utilitarian and systems-driven logic of spacecraft design, suggesting solutions that optimize structural efficiency, life-support, and human well-being simultaneously. Engaging rigorously with space architecture can catalyse breakthroughs across the discipline, redefining architecture as a universal science of habitable systems that applies beyond Earth. Given China’s rapidly advancing space programme, the strategic importance of this frontier is clear. In summary, the convergence of scientific research and architectural practice is redrawing the field’s methodological and conceptual boundaries. China’s architectural science community should seize this opportunity by strengthening its foundational principles while boldly embracing interdisciplinary exploration.Space architecture serves as a model for how theoretical innovation and technological creativity can reinforce each other, yielding knowledge that is both visionary and practical. Embracing such opportunities will not only advance architectural science, but also support China’s broader goals of scientific and technological self-reliance.
