【Abstract】 As the city moves into the inventory renewal phase of construction, campus renovation projects are on the rise. Among these renovations, iconic buildings such as libraries, auditoriums and gymnasiums often receive much attention and adequate budgets. In contrast, the renovation of background buildings faces many challenges, such as a large number of projects, unclear positioning, and limited funding budgets. However,the campus environment is a whole, and background buildings form the tone of the campus environment.Therefore, it is crucial to renovate them with high quality.The theory of "adaptive reuse" has been gradually accepted by the academic community in the context of building renovation. This theory recognizes that the original purpose of a building changes over time and needs to be adapted to meet new needs. The theory attaches importance to the continuity of historical and cultural values, and emphasizes both preservation and renewal. However, the "adaptive reuse" theory shows some limitations in the renovation of campus background buildings. Since the historical value of campus background buildings is usually ambiguous, it is easy to fall into the extreme situation of over-conformity or over-demolition, which is not conducive to the enhancement of the overall appearance of the campus.In order to solve this problem, it is necessary to construct the "adaptive reshaping" method of campus background buildings. First of all, value excavation and reshaping should be carried out. Campus background buildings are revitalized in daily use, and there is a resonance between people and buildings, which is a value that is especially suitable for background buildings. Through renovation, this value can be explored and strengthened, and value reinvention can be realized. However, value reinvention faces three bottlenecks in the renovation of campus background buildings: scale, character, and economy. Therefore, in the retrofit design, it is necessary to pay attention to the balance between the single building and the campus as a whole, echoing the campus cultural lineage and borrowing free environmental resources from the surrounding area.The "adaptive reshaping" strategy based on value reshaping consists of three aspects. Firstly, moving from negative to positive and reshaping the positioning in the completion of functions. By giving the building a suitable function and shaping an appropriate identity, the building will have a certain degree of recognition without affecting the overall campus planning structure. Secondly, from barren to rich, reshape the journey in the historical accumulation. By leaving behind stories and rich expressions, it improves the original average or mediocre design, and carves a more intriguing and rich look for the building. Lastly, from isolation to dialog,the relationship with the environment will be reinvented.This paper takes the office building of the Joint Institute of Chemical Reaction(JICR) on the Yuquan Campus of Zhejiang University as an example. In terms of positioning reshaping, integration with the surrounding environment and the creation of a unique atmosphere were achieved by controlling the volume of the newly placed part, adopting a humble attitude, and refining the personality. In terms of history reshaping,the original cluttered design was improved by leaving a story and enriching expressions, adding a sense of culture and place to the building. In the aspect of relationship reshaping, the surrounding environment and time changes are utilized to add excitement to the building through measures such as borrowing the change of landscape and time.In summary, the "adaptive reshaping" method is of great significance in the renovation of campus background buildings. Exploring and reshaping the value of the building and adopting appropriate remodeling strategies, can satisfy the public’s increasing aesthetic demand while controlling the cost, and continue the physical life of the building while establishing a stronger emotional connection with the public. Therefore, in future architects should further study and apply the adaptive remodeling method in the renewal construction of campus inside and outside.更多还原
