【Abstract】 Smith’s own planned "system" included ethics, political economy, jurisprudence and the history of philosophy. The consistency of his system was achieved through the ideological logic of imagination and impartial spectator. Imagination, as the core element of the history of philosophy, was the epistemological premise of Smith’s system. Imagination ensured the consistency of emotions through its ultimate product in moral philosophy-the impartial spectator, and formed socially appropriate self-interest in economic life, thus achieving the internal unity of Smith’s system. However, the limitations of imagination itself and the corruption of virtue brought about by commercial prosperity further damaged imagination, posing a challenge to Smith’s system. Nevertheless, Smith managed to discover a possible path for the moral reconstruction of commercial society within his system by externalizing the impartial spectator in the fields of law, morality and virtue, thus transforming impartial spectator from an imagined figure functioning as an unbiased third-party arbiter into an ideal spectator endowed with all virtues and embodying the utmost propriety, overcoming the limitations of imagination within the theoretical framework of the sympathy mechanism and presenting his ideological system in its entirety.更多还原
