A Study of Bronze Vessels Unearthed from Qin and Han Tombs in Hubei
【Abstract】 The bronze vessels discovered in the Qin and Han tombs in Hubei mainly include 20 types:ding-tripod, he(box-shaped vessel for food), fang(square-shaped ritual wine vessel), hu(pot for wine or water), suantou hu(garlic-head pot), bian hu(flat-sided pot), jiao hu(spouted pot), tiliang hu(pot with a carrying beam), yi(ladle for pouring water), yan(multi-tiered steamer), fu(deep cooking pot), zeng(steaming basket for yan), mao(helmet-shaped cooking pot), guo(cooking pot), qi(tripod cooking vessel), wan(bowl), pan(plate), xi(washing vessel), ou(wine container), and pen(basin). Through typological and chronological analyses, these bronze vessels can be divided into seven periods: the late Warring States period, the Qin Dynasty to the Early Western Han Dynasty, the middle Western Han Dynasty, the late Western Han Dynasty to the Xin Mang Period, the early Eastern Han Dynasty, the middle Eastern Han Dynasty, and the late Eastern Han Dynasty. The bronze vessels embody multiple cultural elements, including Chu culture, Qin culture, Yue culture, the cultures of the Three Jins and the Two Zhous, and the emerging Han culture. Their development transitions from complexity to simplicity and from diversity to unity, reflecting a shift in funeral concepts—from emphasizing empty rituals to emphasizing practicality. The norms of the Zhou Rites gradually declined, while the norms of the Han Rites were gradually established. This indicates the demise of the Zhou cultural system and the formation of the Han cultural system in Hubei during the Qin and Han periods.
