【Abstract】 Thomas Hardy’s poetry displays prominent ethical concerns over the relationship between humans and animals. Hardy’s poems reveal his view of nature that all things on earth are interconnected, and that he is committed to breaking the boundaries between humans and animals. The animals in his poems, with their independent subjectivity and intrinsic value, have the equal status with human beings. Hardy’s advocacy of loving-kindness to animals combines the spirit of altruism and the thought of respecting animal rights. His animal ethic thoughts bear the traces of the scientific and the philosophical development of the 19th century, and also echo the relevant postmodernist ideas of Derrida and Haraway. Hardy’s animal ethic thoughts might be found to be ahead of his time. And his poetry might be perceived as enlightening for the contemporary animal studies.更多还原
