【Abstract】 In this paper we conduct an in-depth study of the phenomenon that the traditional residential houses known as "Jiaoquan Houses" in the suburbs of Pudong, Shanghai, were not constructed in a single phase. We also infer the relationship between the configuration of the Jiaoquan Houses’ roofs and their construction sequence, with particular attention given to the structural phenomenon of juxtaposed short columns on the Xieshan roofs and the cultural connotations behind it. Through field surveying, mapping, and interviews, we analyze the construction timelines, family population growth, and economic sources of two cases: the Hu Family Compound in Chunxin Village and the Zhang Family Compound in Qigan Village. Furthermore, we examine the hierarchical status relationships implied in the spatial division of the Jiaoquan Houses and the special hierarchical order within the space under the Xieshan roofs.更多还原
