Effects of different habitat on the growth of Polygonatum cyrtonema
【Abstract】 To investigate the effects of different habitat on the growth of Polygonatum cyrtonema, this study used three-year-old P.cyrtonema as the research subject and conducted intercropping experiments under Osmanthus fragrans forest, Phellodendron amurense forest, Cunninghamia lanceolata forest, and Camellia oleifera forest. The study measured the main growth, morphological indicators, leaf SPAD values, and biomass indicators of P.cyrtonema, and performed multiple comparisons and variance analysis on the repeated measurement data. The results showed that intercropping P.cyrtonema under forests exhibited significant advantages in growth, leaf morphology, leaf SPAD value, and biomass accumulation(P<0.05).The fresh weight of rhizomes, dry weight of rhizomes, fresh weight per plant, dry weight per plant, and plant height of P.cyrtonema under P.amurense forest were significantly higher than all other treatments(P<0.05), being 289.43 g, 83.28 g, 402.09 g, 108.37 g, and 123.00 cm, respectively, which were 49.34%, 44.38%, 54.68%, 46.27%, and 33.22% higher than non-forest treatments. The SPAD value, fresh weight of leaves, fresh weight of rhizomes, and dry weight of rhizomes of P.cyrtonema under C.oleifera forest were also excellent, being 47.12, 24.13 g, 269.98 g, and 73.15 g, respectively, which were 9.94%, 25.94%, 39.31%, and 26.82% higher than non-forest treatments. The leaf length, leaf width, leaf thickness, lesf SPAD value, and stem diameter of P.cyrtonema under C.lanceolata forest were significantly higher than those of other treatments(P<0.05),being 19.94 cm, 6.14 cm, 0.36 mm, 53.28,and 12.03 mm, respectively, which were 21.44%, 16.51%, 38.46%, 24.31%, and 25.05% higher than non-forest treatments. The dry weight of stems(including berries) and fresh weight of leaves of P.cyrtonema under O.fragrans forests were significantly higher than all other treatments(P<0.05), being 18.31 g and 24.77 g, respectively, which were 75.38% and 29.28% higher than non-forest treatments. In conclusion, intercropping under forest is a core strategy for achieving efficient cultivation of P.cyrtonema. P.amurense forests is the optimal habitat for high-yield production of P.cyrtonema rhizomes. C.oleifera forest the most promising model for balancing economic benefits and production costs, and intercropping under C.lanceolata forests and O.fragrans forest also shows significant advantages. The results of this study provide empirical support for the practice of the sustainable development model of “Using forests to nourish medicine, using medicine to promote forests”.
