【Abstract】 Hebei local chronicles reveal that the Yan-Zhao martial spirit constitutes a dynamically evolving form of practice throughout historical development. It originates from the unique geographical and historical circumstances. At the individual level, it is embodied in the maintenance of the local order of “banning violence with armed force”, and at the collective level, it is sublimated into the feelings of “loyalty and courage to defend the country”. Functioning as a vehicle for elite discourse, local chronicles do not constitute purely objective records but rather represent selective constructs shaped by contemporaneous demands. From the emphasis on the Confucian ethical discipline of “loyalty, courage, and integrity” during the zenith of imperial rule, to the reliance on local resilience in the turbulent late Qing era, and further to the grand narrative of serving “national strengthening and eugenics” in the Republican period—the essence of the martial spirit underwent continuous reconstitution. Thus, the historical reality of the Yan-Zhao region, along with its collective memory and elite narratives, forms a cultural text woven together—a text whose transmission and evolution are profoundly marked by the traces of temporal change.更多还原
