【Abstract】 Objective To investigate the current state of self-concept and anxiety levels among children with HIV/AIDS in Liangshan,Sichuan. Methods A cluster random sampling method was employed to select 72 children with HIV/AIDS as the study group and 110 healthy children as the control group. The Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders(SCARED)and Piers-Harris Children’s Self-concept Scale(PHCSS) were administered to evaluate and compared self-concept and anxiety levels between the two groups. Additionally, the study group was compared with the national norm. Results The children with HIV/AIDS had significantly higher scores on the somatization/fear,generalized anxiety and separation anxiety subscales,as well as on the total anxiety score, compared to healthy children(P<0.05),their anxiety levels also exceeded national norms(P<0.05).Regarding self-concept,children with HIV/AIDS scored significantly lower on the three factors of behavioral, anxiety and social integration than healthy children(P<0.05). Except for the anxiety factor, all the other self-concept subscales were significantly lower than national norms(P<0.05). The behavioral dimension of self-concept was negatively correlated with all dimensions of anxiety, except social phobia. Similarly, the happiness and satisfaction dimensions were negatively correlated with all anxiety domains except somatization/panic and social phobia. Both the anxiety subscale of self-concept and the total self-concept score were significantly negatively correlated with all dimensions of anxiety(P<0.05). Conclusion The children with HIV/AIDS exhibited significantly higher levels of anxiety and lower levels of self-concept.
