Nabokov’s Exile and Writing:A Mobility Perspective
【Abstract】 As an open-ended concept, “mobility” serves as both a defining experience and a poetic metaphor in Vladimir Nabokov’s life and his literary oeuvre. Attempting to comprehensively examine Nabokov’s exile life, the article tends to divide his life in exile into approximately three phases, each of which is observed through a selection of the fragments of his creative texts of different genres or a profile of his interest in natural history. In fact, these three phases roughly echo the form of “circle” drawn by his travelling routes in physical spaces, simultaneously alluding to the spiral structure of the thetic-antithetic-synthetic modes of his literary writings. From his diasporic writings of modernism to the innovative practices of his subjective realism, and further down to his transcendental self-representations that have largely extended his narrative boundaries, Nabokov is seen continuously refreshing and renovating the forms of his works across various genres while his thoughts are seen deepening along with the changes in geographical contexts. Therefore, Nabokov, both within and outside the textual spaces, offers us a huge room and a fertile ground for interpretation when his life and works are analyzed from the perspective of mobility theory.
