Craft Interaction and Transformation in the Tang Dynasty: Observations Centered on the Shōsōin Collection in Japan
【Abstract】 Changes in decorative arts serve as a direct reflection of shifts in social life, while the integration of Chinese and foreign craftsmanship has long been a driving force in the evolution of both art and society. The Shōsōin collection in Japan, comprising rare and well-preserved artifacts, compensates for the scarcity of organic materials in archaeological contexts and offers crucial material evidence for studying the interactions between Tang China, Central and Western Asia, and Japan. Focusing on the Shōsōin holdings, this paper proposes two key models to describe transformations in medieval Chinese decorative arts: craft interaction and craft transformation. Both models reflect the process of sinicizing foreign elements and contribute to a deeper understanding of cultural shifts from the medieval to early modern periods.
