On the Open Road Journey and Its Cultural Metaphors in Allen Ginsberg’s Poetry
【Abstract】 Allen Ginsberg, a representative writer of the American Beat Generation, has long been the focus of academic attention, but the journey narrative in his poetry has been ignored by critics. Journey is a key element in understanding social reality and an important carrier for human beings to gain experience and realize self-fulfillment. In Ginsberg’s poetry, ethnic minorities trapped by racism fail to find the meaning of existence or cultivate meaningful values. Therefore, through open road journeys such as city roaming, they launch an examination into urban culture and deploy their imagination of multicultural identity, which is in essence a spiritual journey to explore the value of life and seek the recognition of identity. Discussing the open road journey in Ginsberg’s poetry and its cultural metaphors can reveal the author’s philosophical thinking on the existential significance of American ethnic minorities and their ethical responsibility.
