A Study on the Translation Model and Mechanism of Participatory Design based on Actor-network Theory: A Case Study of Shanghai "Wind from There" Urban Space Action
【Abstract】 Faced with the dual challenges of an economic downturn and the explosion of artificial intelligence, Chinese designers are facing an unprecedented crisis of their position as leaders. This study, drawing on the perspective of actor-network theory and taking the "Wind From There" participatory design and urban space action at KIC Garden as an example, analyzes its four stages of translation: "spatial translation" during the planning and design phase, "engineering translation" during the construction and curation phase, "event translation" during the exhibition and tour phase, and "scene translation" during the operation and maintenance phase. The study further summarizes the mechanisms of translation in spatial action: the connections between objects and objects, people and people, people and objects. The study finds that actor-network theory offers a key to unlocking the black box of design decision-making, revealing the interrelationships behind the surface of action. It reduces participatory community regeneration to countless interconnected dynamic chains of action, pointing to a "connective architecture" that prioritizes connections between objects, offering a possibility for a paradigm shift in the spatial design discipline, which is currently facing severe challenges.
