【Abstract】 Objective To explore the relationship between social-efficacy and college students’ internet addiction, and to investigate the mediating role of perceived stress and whether self-esteem plays a moderating role in this mediating process. Methods A total of 881 college students were investigated using the Chinese Socialefficacy Scale, the Chinese Version of the Perception of Stress Scale, the Self-Esteem Scale and the Revised internet Addiction Scale were used. Results(1) Social-efficacy significantly negatively predicted internet addiction(β=-0.06, P<0.01), and significantly negatively predicted perceived stress(β=-0.11, P<0.01).(2) Perceived stress played a partial mediating role between social-efficacy and internet addiction, with a mediation effect value of 0.12, which accounted for 67% of the total effect.(3) The first half pathway of social-efficacy on internet addiction through perceived stress was moderated by self-esteem(β=-0.79, P<0.01). Conclusion Social-efficacy, selfesteem, perceived stress, and internet addiction, constituted a moderated mediation model. The lower sense of socialefficacy, the higher possibility of college students’ internet addiction, perceived stress is an important psychological mechanism between social-efficacy and internet addiction, self-esteem can buffer the impact of social-efficacy on internet addiction and perceived stress.
