【Abstract】 Hong Lou Meng is a traditional Chinese novel taking the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal as part of its setting. Its sequels, Hong Lou Fu Meng and Hong Lou Yuan Meng, turn the Grand Canal from a mere backdrop in the original work into a narrative space for character development, plot progression and thematic presentation. In both sequels, significant towns and cities along the Grand Canal are employed to link the water, and shores of it, as well as these towns and cities, which are integrated into a cohesive system to present the stories through spatial transitions of various stages. The portrayal of the Grand Canal in the two books involves a variety of aspects of the then society, including watercourse management, transportation and communication, towns and cities and socio-cultural dimensions, ranging from social systems of the macro level to micro details, such as bridges, sluices, dams, embankments, boats and docks along the Grand Canal, as well as taxation offices, government offices, temples, scenic spots, historical allusions and legends related to it. The multifaceted cultural presentation of the Grand Canal endows the two works with rich documentary value, as a case of that mutual corroboration between literature and history.
