Multiple Identities and Historical Contributions of Huangbo Zen Buddhist Monk Duli Xingyi
【Abstract】 As one of the representatives of diehards of the Ming Dynasty who traveled to Japan, Duli Xingyi also studied Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, and medicine, and was good at medicine, calligraphy, seal carving, and poetry. He traveled east to Japan at the turn of the Ming and Qing dynasties in the context of social turmoil, and converted to Buddhism the following year and became a disciple of Zen Master Yinyuan Longqi of the Huangbo Sect. The reason why he converted to Buddhism in his later years was mainly the influence of the trend of "believing in Zen Sect" in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties and the sentimentality of missing his homeland. Since then, he worked tirelessly to travel all over Japan to practice medicine and disseminate religious teachings, and had exerted an important impact on Japan during the Edo period as a healer, calligrapher, seal engraver, Confucian scholar, and poet, leaving behind a rich cultural heritage and making important contributions to Sino-Japanese cultural exchanges.
