Rediscovering a Cinematic Gem:Research on the American Translated Film Salt of the Earth in Seventeen Years Era
【Abstract】 During the “Seventeen Years” era in China, Salt of the Earth stood out as the sole American film introduced to the Chinese audience. Indirectly inspired by “The Case of Ten Hollywood People”, the film focuses on the American working class and faced governmental boycotts in the US due to its democratic and pro-communist undertones. The film’s international screening in Europe, America, and “Third World” countries garnered significant attention. Its translation and introduction to China underscored a synergistic alignment between the film’s socio-political narrative and the Chinese political and cultural milieu. By recentering the workers in public discourse through the engagement of intellectuals, newspapers, and magazines, this film provides a powerful reference for the spread of the consciousness of the working class’ s “Being-for-itself” and the practice of the sinicization of Marxism.
