A Primary Study on the Stone Relief with a Boar-headed Figure from Zhucheng, Shandong Province
【Abstract】 The stone relief with a boar-headed figure discovered from Zhucheng, Shandong Province, constitutes the sole instance observable in China presently and probably depicted the boar incarnation of Vishnu, which was pervasive within Hinduism. This well-preserved stone relief can be retrospected to no later than the early 3rd century AD. It not only antedates the hitherto-known images of Vishnu within the ancient India but also is conspicuously invaluable. Besides, it holds substantial significance in the history of transportation and functions as the crucial material evidence of cultural interflows between Shandong, Northern Jiangsu of China and India by sea during the Han Dynasty. Taking this as a launchpad, reassessing the influence of India and other foreign cultures in the coastal areas of China during the latter period of the Han, the Wu, and the Jin dynasties might facilitate the formulation of a more germane comprehension of the current condition wherein Buddhist art entered China via the maritime routes.
