APPLICATION OF PARTICIPATORY GIS ENHANCED ANALYSIS FRAMEWORK FOR ECOSYSTEM SERVICE VALUATION
【Abstract】 To address the costly time, cost, and management effort of Public Participation in GIS(PPGIS)in Ecosystem Services(ES)applications where complex spatial analysis/statistics are the goal. The study is designed to provide an enhanced analytical framework to accommodate complex geospatial analysis techniques.Based on this, the study selected Potatso National Park as the study area for presentation; then interviewed travelers who participated in participatory paper mapping and used color markers to hand-draw(as polygons)self-perceived areas associated with different categories of ES;finally, by collecting two-dimensional data while using Ordinary least squares(OLS)Geographically weighted regression(GWR)and Moran’s I were used to assess the spatial autocorrelation of ES across the landscape. In addition, in addition to participatory mapping, respondents participated in completing a semi-structured questionnaire that was analyzed using principal components analysis and hierarchical clustering, which revealed differences in the structure of perceived importance of different ESs.The results of the study showed that firstly supply services were most valued, followed by regulation, support and cultural services.Among them, the two have relatively similar patterns of appreciation in terms of regulating and supporting services, while cultural services are the least trusted, i.e.,their historical functions are quite different from those of the government-designated ecotourism and Potatso National Park. And the study found that communities do not place a high value on the non-material benefits of the park.Geographically, most ES largely covered the entire Potatso National Park, with the exception of cultural services, while the core areas of the national park had the most overlap between service provision and regulation. The resulting revealed spatial synergies can identify areas where potential conflicts between extractive and non-extractive uses may occur, informing the sustainable management of Potatso National Park and other protected areas.
