城市何以有情:媒介视角下的“城市—情感”路径
How Does a City Have Emotions: The “City-Emotion” Path from a Media Perspective
【Abstract】 Since modern times, urban planning and governance have always been shrouded in a rational order, characterized by functionalism and an emphasis on efficiency, which have suppressed the vibrant urban life. The concrete jungle and cold faces have become prominent images of modern cities. However, people have been constantly returning to the questions such as “What is a city?” “What kind of city do we need?” “What is the essence of city life?”. They have come to realize the significance of cities as organic entities and emotional communities.Professor Chen Long pointed out that the transformation of media in today’s Chinese society is reflected in the “collective action” within social media spaces. This interactive practice, with a “conference hall” essence, aggregates individual cognition and macro politics, reshaping a quasi-public nature of media characterized by “empathy-consensus”. Professor Zhang Ning discussed the characteristics of two types of emotions in urban and rural areas from the perspective of social and group individuals, highlighting the complexity of urban emotions. Professor Deng Jianguo proposed that in the construction of a communicable city, citizens’ emotional attachment to the city is crucial. Media should act as a bridge between the two, promoting the enhancement of citizens’ “participatory communication capital”. Professor Hu Yiqing pointed out that the construction of communicable cities currently faces many challenges, especially the deep embedding of social media into urban life. It can lead to both communicable connections or urban segregation. Modern urban development should balance technological governance and emotional adjustment. Professor Wang Xin believes that a city is not only a physical space but also a container for emotional flow and interaction. The atmosphere generated by people and space through the subject’s sense of life gives the city its spiritual charm. Thus, rebuilding the concept of “neighborhood” can bestow a unique charm upon the city. Professor Zhou Jiwu, taking family as the starting point, grasped the logic of social change in the contemporary emotional structure by analyzing media devices. He provided a cognitive perspective and methodological dimension for better understanding the emotional experience of the transformation from rural to urban China. Assistant Professor Zhang Yan, starting from the current positioning of media and urban games, pointed out that in the era of mobile digital technology, the “new local” where people interact and coexist with space and technology is becoming a common emotional background for urban dwellers. It is nurturing a new path for contemporary urban community reconstruction.
