【Abstract】 This paper aims to understand the correlation between exercise and state anxiety among college students staying in dormitories during the COVID-19 outbreak. METHODS: The basic characteristics of exercise and state anxiety among 1682 college students in an applied research university in Shanghai were investigated using the Demographic Data Analysis Form, Physical Activity Rating Scale(PARS-3)and State Anxiety Inventory(S-AI). Results:(a)There was a significant negative correlation between exercise and state anxiety level(r=-0.107, P<0.001).(b)Gender: male students exercised more than female students(t=4.406, P<0.01), and female students had higher levels of state anxiety than male students(t=-2.977, P<0.01);(c)Grade: sophomore students exercised more than freshman students(t=-4.453, P<0.01), and there was no significant difference in the level of state anxiety(P>0.05);(d)Major: sophomore students exercised more than freshman students(t=-4.453, P<0.01), and there was no significant difference in the level of state anxiety(P>0.05)(4)in terms of majors: the amount of exercise and the level of state anxiety were not significant among college students of different majors(P>0.05);(e)in terms of online fitness methods: the amount of exercise was significantly higher among college students who participated in online live classes than those who participated in school-based physical education classes(t=3.998,P<0.01), and the level of state anxiety was also significantly lower than those who participated in school-based physical education classes(t=-2.050,P<0.05);Conclusion: under the epidemic, planned exercise in the dormitory environment under control can reduce the level of state anxiety among college students; college students’ participation in the webcast teaching method has a significant effect on alleviating state anxiety.
