Advances in amphibian research in Guizhou:A review of 36 years of amphibian diversity and systematic taxonomy
【Abstract】 The mountainous Karst ecosystem in Guizhou Province, China, is rich in amphibian resources, but with the severe global decline in amphibian populations and the continuous description of new species, further assessment of amphibian diversity in the region based on minimum conservation units is particularly needed. Based on the data of the past 36 years(1987—2022), the species list of amphibian diversity and endangered conservation category in Guizhou were revised, as well as the species richness patterns and trends in genetic resources, systematics and research were assessed. In the past five years, new amphibian species have been described in Guizhou at a rate of about five species per year, and genetic data for phylogenetic studies have increased dramatically, advancing the evolutionary understanding of the tree of life and the history of population dynamics of amphibians in Guizhou. Diversity and conservation remain the focus of amphibian research in Guizhou. Distribution data and MaxEnt model predictions identified the Fanjingshan Mountain-Daloushan Mountain Biodiversity Priority Conservation Area(BPCA), the Leigong Mountain-Maolan Karst BPCA and the Wumeng Mountain BPCA. However, the absence of basic natural history data(dietary, morphology, breeding) for many species limits our understanding of amphibians in karst habitats, which may have different evolutionary trajectories. To further strengthen the research and conservation of amphibians in Guizhou, building the discipline, cultivating talents and integrating data from different sources to create a usable public database is important, so that the rich amphibian resources can be used for ecological security and socio-economic construction.
