Ideal and Reality: On the Inherent Contradiction of Interculturality
【Abstract】 Interculturality originates from philosophy of intersubjectivity. The academia has often used it with a conscious focus on the connotations of “equal dialogue” and “interactive integration” inherited from intersubjectivity, but neglected the changes brought about by introduction of cultural factors to the relationship between subjects, which conceals the conflict between the ideal of equality pursued in interculturality and the reality of hidden struggles. As a result, an inherent contradiction that is difficult to resolve has emerged. This contradiction makes interculturality manifest in multiple forms such as cultural invasion, assimilation, borrowing, and fusion. The main factors causing these contradictions are the power struggles inherent in discourse, the differences of cultural needs, and the conflicts of ideology embedded in it. By analyzing the ideal and realistic dimensions of interculturality, it helps deepen our understanding of intercultural communication and avoid blind idealization in international exchanges.
