Fintech Development and Income Distribution Improvement: An Empirical Test Based on the Intermediary Effect of Financial Inclusion
【Abstract】 Using panel data of 73 countries(regions) from 2013-2019, this paper empirically examines the impact of Fintech development on income distribution and takes financial inclusion as an entry point to clarify the mechanism of Fintech’s impact on income distribution. The study shows that:(1) Fintech development helps to narrow the income gap, and the rise in the per capita credit size of Fintech has a significant inhibitory effect on the Gini coefficient;(2) The direct impact of Fintech on income inequality is reflected in changing the income share of low-income groups and high-income groups, with the greatest impact on the lowest and highest income groups;(3) Financial availability, usage rate and penetration rate play a significant role and they all play a full intermediary effect in the relationship between Fintech and the Gini coefficient, while they play a masking effect in the relationship between Fintech and the income share of the lowest 20% group. The empirical results of this paper suggest that improving financial inclusion through further development of Fintech and thus narrowing the income distribution gap is an effective way to achieve common wealth.
