On the Butcher’s Meat Hanging Rack:An Archaeological Study of Zheng Xuan’s Annotation to The Rite of Zhou
【Abstract】 In his annotation to the Niuren( 牛人) sector of The Rites of Zhou, Zheng Xuan( 郑玄) mentioned the meat hanging rack in Han period. Scholars of ancient and modern times have discussed its shape and structure, which is quite controversial. According to the images on the stone and portrait brick dated to Han and Wei periods, the meat hanging rack can be divided into two types, namely the vertical type on the ground and the pendent type on the roof beam. Further, the former can be divided into two kinds. One is two vertical stick with one horizontal stick type; the other one is the horse type. The ground vertical hanging rack is removable, and the pendent type is fixed. As a simple and practical hanging device, the meat hanging rack originated very early. The penalty of burning created by King Zhou of the Shang Dynasty described in literature was probably inspired by the vertical type on ground at that time. The bamboo slips discovered in Hubei entitled Rongcheng Shi( 容成氏)called that penalty paoge( 炮格), instead of paoluo( 炮烙),which is a evidence for this conjecture.
