A Preliminary Study on the Duality of Japanese Oriental Historiography and Its Causes
【Abstract】 From the perspective of the philosophy of history, Japanese oriental historiography, as a part of modern Western academic thought, was born with a dual character: scientific and humanistic. The former refers to the rational and positivist thinking on which it is based, while the latter refers to the irrational thinking in historiography, such as aesthetic experience and nationalist positions. Taking the studies of Shiratori Kuakichi and Tsuda Sōkichi as examples, this paper analyzes the representations and the historical roots and limitations of their historiographical duality.
