【Abstract】 Zheng Chenggong is considered a positive figure in the two sides of the Taiwan Straits and Japan, notably for his significant governing achievements in Taiwan. Zheng is honored as “Kai Tai Sheng Wang”(the Founding Sage King of Taiwan region) on both sides of the Straits. Around the mid-Edo period, Zheng became widely known among the Japanese. Chikamatsu Monzaemon’s jōruri play(a Japanese folk performing art) The Battles of Coxinga, which premiered at Takemoto-za in 1715 played an essential role in making Zheng into a household hero. By analyzing a variety of sources—including The Battles of Coxinga in the Edo period, news reports in the Meiji period, contemporary scholarly works, and historical fiction—this paper sheds light on the changing image of Zheng Chenggong in Japan.更多还原
