From Proletarian to Revolutionary: The evolution of "class consciousness" in Hirabayashi Taiko’s Manchuria Literature
【Abstract】 In 1924, when she was 19 years old, Hirabayashi Taiko journeyed to Manchuria. This experience became an important resource for her early works such as Abandon, In Charity Hospital and Laying the Train. In the process of repeating the Manchuria experience, her "class consciousness" underwent a qualitative leap, from pouring out personal experiences to shaping proletarian revolutionary images, and from indifference and belittling of Chinese coolies to calling for a proletarian revolution. Hirabayashi’s Manchuria experience literature is a part of the Chinese experience literature of Japanese proletarian writers from the 1920s to the 1930s. It is precisely because of the existence of the image of Chinese laborers in their works that the image of China in modern Japanese literature has a glorious side and is not completely covered by the shadow of imperialist ideology.
