【Abstract】 By tracing back the origin of the concept of images, the present paper associates the Chinese philosophical concept of “Tao” with Roman Ingarden’s concept of metaphysical qualities in literature and delves into the profound connotation involved in them. The findings show that the study of the metaphysical thinking common to both the Chinese culture and the western culture, the comparison and the analysis of the ancients’ thoughts and the modern ideas, the inquiry into the contemporary values of the classical thoughts are all conducive to the reciprocal interpretation between the past and the present and to the mutual transmission between the Chinese learning and the Western learning. The present paper explains what is metaphysical quality and the way to reproduce it in another language. The paper discusses how a translator can get into “Tao”by understanding the profound feelings and significance of the original and then rendering them into the target language to convey the truth, to spread the spiritual values of the original and to perform the positive social functions, etc.
